Click this picture to learn about the magic of guilt, because even though this picture is from Pinterest, my original picture choice was from Psychology Today.
Cosmo is the person that really solidified what guilt was for me. And guilt is something that controls my actions, even when I don't want them to. My mom had a bad habit of making me feel guilty in order to do the things I didn't want to do but should be doing. It may be a great tactic to get your kid to do what you want them to do, but it did this psychological fuck up that made me feel guilty for making people help me or go out of their way for me. I'd overthink and eventually felt guilty about interrupting someone to ask a simple question like "Can I use the bathroom?" It's trivial to think what something one person does to us can affect us our whole lives. This even makes me feel guilty for bringing it up, as if it makes my mom a bad person for using that strategy. It doesn't. It makes her human. I've seen a lot of people around me use the guilt tactic in order to make others feel so guilty they go through lengths to apologize. I've even seen customers use it on me to try to get something for free. It is up to us to be the ruler of our own emotions and overcome what lengths we are willing to go to be our best selves. If you're feeling guilty about something, let that guilt wash over you at 100% for 60 seconds. And then let it go. Emotions are meant to be acknowledged and let go so we can go on feeling the next one. As an emotional creature myself, I encourage you to take the plunge and do not feel guilty for being you. Even if some people may not like who you are, some people might just think you're downright amazing!
Guilt is a weird thing and I am not an expert on it. Seriously check out that link attached to the photo and maybe also join our writer's group if you're feeling fancy. Crystal Word Vomit! FB! Go now!
